Workday: how to get through the hiring system of the world's biggest employers
The hiring system of global corporations — banking, pharma, consulting, big tech
Workday is HR and hiring software used by many of the world's largest corporations. You will recognise it the moment it asks you to create a candidate account, upload your resume, and then… fix a form it auto-filled incorrectly. That step is not a formality — it is the single most important moment of your application.
Account, upload, auto-fill — how a Workday application works
After you upload your resume, the Workday parser tries to split the document into profile fields: titles, employers, dates, education, skills. Recruiters work mostly off that profile — not your file. If the parser assigns wrong dates or merges two jobs into one and you do not fix it, the broken version of your career is exactly what the recruiter sees.
The second layer is screening questions: work authorisation, availability, required certifications. In many configurations, answering “no” to a critical question ends the process automatically — this is the one place where Workday genuinely rejects on its own, with no human involved.
The biggest Workday traps
Trap #1: trusting the auto-fill. Candidates click “next” without checking the fields — and submit a profile with gaps in dates or truncated experience. Trap #2: decorative resumes. Tables, columns and graphic headers are the most common reasons the parser loses the structure. Trap #3: unusual date formats — the parser understands a plain “MM/YYYY – MM/YYYY” best.
There is good news too: since most candidates submit unchecked profiles, a careful candidate immediately stands out. Five minutes spent fixing fields after upload is the cheapest advantage money can't buy in corporate hiring.
Checklist: a resume ready for Workday
Always fix the fields after auto-fill
Check every title, every date and every education entry. The profile, not the file, is what the recruiter reads.
A plain layout without tables or columns
A one-column resume with classic section headings minimises parsing errors at upload.
MM/YYYY date format
“03/2022 – 06/2025” parses more reliably than “spring 2022 — present” or years alone.
Take screening questions seriously
They are Workday's only true automatic gate. Read carefully and answer truthfully — but completely.
The ad's keywords inside your job descriptions
Recruiters search profiles using phrases from the requirements. Put them in your duty descriptions, not only the skills list.
One account, an up-to-date profile
Workday remembers your profile with a given employer. Update it when you re-apply — stale data can undercut your new resume.

Frequently asked questions about Workday
Why did Workday fill the form from my resume incorrectly?
The parser only understands simple structure: a chronological list of roles, readable dates, standard headings. Tables, columns, graphics and unusual date formats end in scrambled fields. Simplify the document and always fix the profile manually after upload.
Does Workday automatically reject resumes?
The resume itself — no; a human decides. What is automatic are the knockout screening questions (e.g. missing work authorisation) and — indirectly — search: a profile without the right keywords never surfaces in the recruiter's results.
Do I have to create an account to apply through Workday?
In practice yes — each employer runs its own Workday candidate portal. The upside: the account remembers your profile and application status. The downside: you create a new one for each company.
How do I check what a parser will extract from my resume before applying?
Upload it to the free ATS Buster scanner — you'll see the document through a hiring robot's eyes and get a version tailored to the job ad before you ever touch the Workday form. Free account, 3 credits, no card.
